Flegere/Brevent/Midi

Roslyn: Terrible snow on Flegere but awesome views over the Mont Blanc Massif

Location: Brevent/Flegere/Aiguille Du Midi
Snow: Ungroomed crusty pistes (Flegere); nice soft pistes (Brevent); tracked but soft (Midi)
Weather: Sun & thin cloud

Ski day number two of my sister’s short visit to Chamonix.  We wanted to get a lap off the Midi but morning queues have reportedly been horrendous at the moment so we hit Brevent/Flegere for some pistes first. … [continue reading]

Another Visitor

Roslyn: Overlooking the Mont Blanc Massif on the Le Tour home run

Location: Le Tour/Grands Montets
Snow: Pistes perfect in the am, soft pm; off-piste crusty in the am, tracked but soft pm
Weather: Mostly sunny

My wee sister Roslyn is in town for a long weekend armed with cash from our parents to make it a good visit.  I’m not sure if the food or the skiing will be the highlight… [continue reading]

Same Again Please

Fulton: All smiles at the bottom of the powder face we traversed to

Location: Champex Lac
Snow: 20-25cm powder, some wind-affected, some slight sun crust on sunny slopes
Weather: Mostly sun, some wind

Back to Champex today; so nice I skied it twice.  We took touring kit to explore a little and warmed up with runs left and right of the chairlift, still finding light untouched boot-top powder easily even though it hasn’t… [continue reading]

Champex Lac

Josh: Skier's-right of the chairlift

Location: Champex Lac
Snow: 20-25cm light powder, quite sluffy in steeper sections
Weather: Sun & thin cloud

Poor lift systems, tricky terrain, unfriendly staff and crowds battling for fresh snow.  These all suck, but luckily we were in Champex Lac today where none of these apply.

After a delayed start thanks to Officer Bawbag and Sargeant Knobhead at the Swiss… [continue reading]

Lunchtime On The Plan

Lorne: Dropping in on the first lap

Location: Plan de l’Aiguille
Snow: 25-30cm powder, heavy lower down
Weather: Mixed sun & cloud

Snow continued to fall for most of yesterday through to this morning, topping things up even further after our long dry spell.  I had some work to do this morning so just got a couple of laps from the Midi midstation with Graham and Colin… [continue reading]

Welcome Back Winter

Lorne: Fresh snow at last

Location: Vallorcine
Snow: 20-25cm powder on a variable base, some very shallow slab and small loose avalanche activity
Weather: Steady light-moderate snowfall, poor visibility, some wind

Fat skis, low-light lenses and no suncream today for the first time in 3 weeks.  This can mean only one thing: winter is back.  Rain/sleet/snow has been falling steadily in town since yesterday morning… [continue reading]

Morning Park Laps

Prime kicker conditions all morning

Location: Grands Montets
Snow: Firm in the morning, soft and slow by 1pm
Weather: Bluebird

Morning park laps today and excellent laps they were, with nice firm snow all morning for fast takeoffs and forgiving landings until 1pm when things were pretty done, except for the lower section’s stepdown landing which seems to have been carved from a solid block… [continue reading]

Morzine

Avoriaz/Chatel pistes in excellent soft condition

Location: Portes Du Soleil
Snow: Soft pistes, crusty off-piste
Weather: Bluebird, very warm

I headed through to Morzine last night (1h15 from Chamonix) to catch up with my mate Gill while on holiday there with her usual crew and to use one of my lift ticket coupons.  After their St Patrick Day celebrations the night before, the evening was a… [continue reading]

Slushy

Angus: Aspiring ski catalog model

Location: Brevent
Snow: Very heavy & slushy, some natural wet avalanches on sunny slopes
Weather: Bluebird, very warm

Very warm and sunny today, so just another quick ski on the south-facing slopes of Brevent.  The snow was very soft and heavy everywhere, but the pistes still fun, the off-piste skiable and we were finding fun natural jibs everywhere.  Real t-shirt… [continue reading]

Still Fun On The Hill

Spence: Making the most of the current conditions off the Herse

Location: Grands Montets
Snow: Some chalky off-piste, lots of soft bumps, soft & slushy pistes
Weather: Bluebird, warm

More dry & warm weather all week, and I’m not quite motivated to head out touring to the conditions which have been reported recently, but give it a few more weeks and we should have some good spring snow even if there’s… [continue reading]
