A Good Morning

Joel: Top of the couloir off the Pourrie

Location: Brevent
Snow: Slightly heavy, quite sluffy
Weather: Mostly sunny

A nice morning on Brevent today, up early to beat the holiday queues.  A quick skin to the Pourrie first, for slightly heavy & sluffy snow but nice and smooth in the couloir we took back towards the resort.  ENSA couloir next, after spotting only a few tracks going in… [continue reading]

Not the deepest snow, but good enough

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: Soft & powdery where untouched
Weather: Bluebird above the clouds

Just a quick one on the Pourrie this morning above the clouds.  My lungs were struggling with even the short climb but we still got up ahead of one other pair and a massive group of snowboarders, dropping in towards the Combes de Gliere & Lachenal… [continue reading]

Nice soft/sugary snow on the Mort descent variation

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: Mixed
Weather: Bluebird, warm

Very mixed snow today but a fun day anyway linking two Chamonix classics.

A quick ascent form Index to Col de la Floria brought us to some chalky/grabby snow in the main couloir, tracked but not tracked-out, followed by a mix of soft and wind/warmth-affected snow on the mellow slopes below.  From… [continue reading]

Combe du Pouce

Graham: Skins back on for the crossing towards the Gliere

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: Mixed
Weather: Bluebird, warm

With warm temperatures and high winds earlier this week we weren’t expecting great snow today, but had planned an interesting new little route in the Rouges for a bit of fun anyway: the Combe du Pouce on the W face of the the Aiguille de la Glière with an exit to Le… [continue reading]

Mont Buet NE Face

First turns on Mont Buet's NE face, incredible

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: Soft & smooth on N aspects, variable elsewhere, heavy lower down
Weather: Very light cloud

Conditions have been prime this week for high altitude steep skiing on north faces so all of Chamonix’s trophy lines have seen a lot of action but I had only one thing on my mind: a descent of Mont Buet’s NE… [continue reading]

Col du Belvedere

Josh: Blasting through the slightly heavier snow

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: 20cm powder, increasingly heavy as we descended
Weather: Overcast, some wind

A bit gloomy today but we went touring anyway with plans to ski the Col de Beaugeant, my favourite descent in the Aiguilles Rouges.  From 10am lifts we were up towards Lac Blanc from Index in good time (Floria lift wasn’t running) where we bumped… [continue reading]

A Wee Tour

Jonny: Creamy smooth snow off the Col des Crochues

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: 20cm powder
Weather: Bluebird, cold in the shade

The first bluebird day after the recent snowfalls and time for a quick tour in the Rouges on the classic Crochues-Berard traverse.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: it’s the most popular tour in the Chamonix Valley for a reason, it’s easy, safe and fun… [continue reading]!

Hot Tour

Rob: Taking in the views towards the Mont Blanc Massif from Col de Beaugeant

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: Firm & choppy in the shade, spring snow in the sun, very heavy low down
Weather: Bluebird, very hot

A change of plans midway through today’s tour but we still ended up with a really fun descent in good spring snow and hot temperatures.

We had planned to ski a new route to us, the NE… [continue reading]

Quick Tour

Col de Berard, solo

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: Mostly 10cm soft snow on a firm, choppy base
Weather: Sun & light cloud

Back on the Crochues-Berard solo today as the group plan didn’t work with my schedule, moving nice and quick on my own and timing things today just out of interest.

Top of Floria to Col des Crochues: 18 minutes up by bootpacking… [continue reading]

And Again

Standard Col de Berard solo shot

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: Spring snow/windblown on the main descent
Weather: Sunny then light clouds

Back on the Crochues-Berard Traverse on my own once again.  A solo mission wasn’t the original plan; Martin was up for his first real ski tour but one third of the way up to the Col des Crochues his new knee injury was giving him… [continue reading]
