Quick Laps

Scotty: Finding some smooth windblown snow off piste

Location: Brevent/Flegere
Snow: Firm, some windblown
Weather: Flat light, windy, light snowfall

Just a few quick local laps on Brevent & Flegere for Scotty’s last ski day today.  The snow was mostly firm but smooth windblown patches were skiing pretty nicely so trying to spot those in the flat light was the way to go.  Light snowfall above midstation; hopefully… [continue reading]

Better Than Expected

Jim: Slash with a backdrop

Location: Brevent/Flegere
Snow: 20cm powder
Weather: Hazy cloud

No big expectations today but it was a fun one.  Jonny and his pals are in town for a well-timed couple of weeks’ riding and we headed up Brevent early to check things out.  The top bin wasn’t open to skiers but there was still plenty of fun terrain to play on… [continue reading]

Wee Chair Trees

Good to be in the air again

Location: Flegere
Snow: 30-40cm powder
Weather: Heavy snowfall

After a very wet week colder temperatures have finally returned bringing the snowline down to about valley-level.  This morning’s Swiss roadtrip plans were scuppered thanks to the Tunnel des Montets being closed so we settled for some quick laps of Flegere’s “wee chairlift” (Evettes 3-man chair) instead.

The snow was deep and… [continue reading]

Couple Of Laps

Lorne: Picking through rocks off Floria (no camera today, phone pic will have to do)

Location: Flegere
Snow: Heavy spring snow
Weather: Overcast then snowing

Just a quick lunchtime ski around Flegere today before the weather really comes in over the weekend, and just a couple of big laps off Floria as it turned out.  Off piste snow was pretty heavy but spotting the smoother sections was the way to go again for some nice… [continue reading]

A Day Of Two Halves

Luke, Ginge: Bumpy but softer lower down

Location: Aiguille du Midi/Brevent/Flegere
Snow: Refrozen ruts then spring moguls (Midi), spring snow/slush (Brevent/Flegere)
Weather: Hazy cloud, hot

Ginge is back in town this week but only free for one day’s skiing today (his first and only of the winter) after spending a few days and nights up the mountain on a climbing mission, and without touring gear, so we… [continue reading]

Resort Laps

Martin: Traversing to Hotel Face

Location: Brevent/Flegere
Snow: Soft everywhere, sometimes a bit choppy, good pistes
Weather: Bluebird

No-one to tour with today so Martin and I had planned a Midi lap at lunchtime.  But… the Midi had been closed for an hour with “Info at 12pm” announced.  Not sure if it would actually reopen we headed up Flegere instead and across to Brevent for… [continue reading]

More Slush

Alex: Slushy takeoff with a nice view

Location: Brevent/Flegere
Snow: Soft/slushy
Weather: Mostly sunny, warm

I’ve been suffering with a nasty bug for the past few days (my fault, it seems 48 hours isn’t enough time to give ill friends to recover before hanging out with them), but wanted to get up the mountain for some easy skiing anyway.

Up Brevent and across to Flegere at 12.30pm… [continue reading]

Slush, Glorious Slush

Martin: Slushy bumps

Location: Brevent/Flegere
Snow: Soft/slushy pistes, off-piste variable
Weather: Thickening cloud

Now this was a fun day on the hill.  No backpacks, ripping around as a group, plenty kickers & gaps forming and no crowds.

We skied around 12.30 to 3.30pm with the pistes starting nice and soft and ending up really slushy (we like slush).  Moguls were semi-forming on the… [continue reading]

Flegere/Brevent/Midi

Roslyn: Terrible snow on Flegere but awesome views over the Mont Blanc Massif

Location: Brevent/Flegere/Aiguille Du Midi
Snow: Ungroomed crusty pistes (Flegere); nice soft pistes (Brevent); tracked but soft (Midi)
Weather: Sun & thin cloud

Ski day number two of my sister’s short visit to Chamonix.  We wanted to get a lap off the Midi but morning queues have reportedly been horrendous at the moment so we hit Brevent/Flegere for some pistes first. … [continue reading]

Goodbye Dave

Lorne: Overlooking the S face of Mont Buet from the top of Brevent

Location: Brevent/Flegere/Les Praz/The Pub
Snow: Perfect soft pistes, off piste tracked but soft and skiable
Weather: Cloudy then sunny

I’ve been really up an down for the past week since Dave Tapsfield was taken from us on Mont Buet last Tuesday, but after talking through the events of the day and letting things sink in a bit I’m beginning to… [continue reading]
