Barbey Couloir

Alex: The most fun section of the descent

Location: Argentiere Basin
Snow: Boot-top powder where it mattered
Weather: Bluebird

Excellent conditions in Barbey Couloir today off the back side of the Aiguille d’Argentiere.  A little firm at the top but once through the rock choke the snow was near-perfect boot-top powder, just a little sluffy but nothing to worry us much.  Steep but not scary-steep; very fun.  The… [continue reading]

Dent de Fenestral

The full group at Col de Fenestral

Location: Finhaut
Snow: Soft spring snow, heavy low down
Weather: Bluebird, warm

Very nice soft spring snow on a pretty relaxed tour today.  A quick ascent from Finhaut got us to Col de Fenestral then around a bit to descend the SE face under the Dent de Fenestral.  A nasty start to the entrance couloir meant that a bit of… [continue reading]

Y Couloir

Graham: Finding the entrance to Y Couloir

Location: Argentiere Basin
Snow: Very firm & rutted at the top, softening lower
Weather: Bluebird, some wind

Graham and I headed up the Aiguille d’Argentiere to try to find good snow in the skier’s-right branch of Y Couloir today, but nae luck.  Very firm snow in the first half of the branch with horrible ruts, softening just a little lower… [continue reading]

Floria/Mort

Nice soft/sugary snow on the Mort descent variation

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: Mixed
Weather: Bluebird, warm

Very mixed snow today but a fun day anyway linking two Chamonix classics.

A quick ascent form Index to Col de la Floria brought us to some chalky/grabby snow in the main couloir, tracked but not tracked-out, followed by a mix of soft and wind/warmth-affected snow on the mellow slopes below.  From… [continue reading]

Combe du Pouce

Graham: Skins back on for the crossing towards the Gliere

Location: Aiguilles Rouges
Snow: Mixed
Weather: Bluebird, warm

With warm temperatures and high winds earlier this week we weren’t expecting great snow today, but had planned an interesting new little route in the Rouges for a bit of fun anyway: the Combe du Pouce on the W face of the the Aiguille de la Glière with an exit to Le… [continue reading]

Le Petit Croisse Baulet E Face

Graham: Dropping into the E face of Le Petit Croisse Baulet

Location: Portes du Mont Blanc
Snow: 25cm powder, a little sugary lower down
Weather: Bluebird, cold, windy up high

A little resort touring today from Megeve’s lifts, something we had heard is worth some short hikes and an area we know a little from summer biking.

From the Combloux base we took lifts up to Sommet des Salles before a… [continue reading]

Here We Go

Feeling good in the powder

Location: La Fouly
Snow: 30cm powder, some wind & sun-affected
Weather: Bluebird

Winter 16/17 is well and truly upon us.  After some bike maintenance on my return to Chamonix I only managed a few rides off the Flegere cablecar, one at Loriaz and an excellent late-afternoon descent from Plan de l’Aiguille before temperatures dropped last week and the snow started… [continue reading]

Bail

Home on the Argentiere Glacier

Location: Argentiere Basin
Snow: Mostly soft and deep
Weather: Bluebird

Very tired legs today; maybe stretching is a good idea after all.  Something in the Argentiere Basin was the plan and I was pretty sure I would bail but thought I’d go out for a bit of a skin anyway and maybe part way up a route.

Off early lifts… [continue reading]

Capucin Couloir

Longer turns in the second half of the couloir

Location: Aiguille du Midi
Snow: 30-40cm powder
Weather: Bluebird, cold

I only have a week of skiing left this winter as I’m going to Finale for a few days’ biking next Thursday before heading to Glasgow for a week.  So only a few good weather days left to get some good final descents in.  Today: Capucin Couloir on the NE… [continue reading]

Glacier de Bron

Graham: Best snow of the day in the middle of the descent

Location: Le Tour to Trient
Snow: Smooth & soft but a bit grabby
Weather: Bluebird, windy

Snow falling for two days and blue skies forecast; conditions were going to be good today but crowd avoidance was our main goal.  So we dingied any plans of skiing Grands Montets or the Midi and instead came up with a pretty mellow touring… [continue reading]
